Our Story
Dawn and Li Ming's Ollette
🐾 Welcome to Tails of the Dog, where a lifetime of canine companionship meets over 30 years of paws-on experience in the world of dogs. I’m Dawn, and I’m thrilled to be your guide on this exciting journey into the wonderful realm of puppy parenting.
Growing up with dogs was more than just a part of my childhood—it shaped my entire life. My passion for our four-legged friends led me to start showing and breeding Chow Chows when I was just a high schooler in grade 10. I registered the puppies i bred with the Canadian Kennel Club under the kennel name Li Ming’s (this is Dawn in Chinese). Over the years, my furry family expanded to include not just Chow Chows but for the last two decades, German Shepherds also became an integral part of my life. Along the way, I’ve worn many hats—dog trainer, breeder, groomer, and proud owner and operator of a boarding kennel and dog grooming business for an enjoyable 34 years.
The joy of boarding dogs of various breeds became a cherished chapter in my story. My boarding kennel had the pleasure of hosting not just Chows and Shepherds, but an eclectic mix of different dog breeds, ranging from Saint Bernard’s, Bulldogs, Poodles, to chihuahua’s and many more. Each furry guest brought their unique personalities and quirks, offering me the chance to appreciate the diverse traits and personalities that can be found in our canine companions.
In the midst of wagging tails and playful paws, our kennel also became a temporary home to police dogs, including a remarkable narcotics detection canine. This brave canine hero had a hit issued on him due to the significant impact he made in taking drugs off the streets. It was an honor to provide a safe haven for these working dogs, witnessing firsthand the incredible contributions they make to our communities.
I also had the pleasure of hosting a hybrid wolf puppy named Cane. This extraordinary wolf pup grew up to be the majestic creature you see gracing the blue cover of Shania Twain’s album, aptly titled “Shania Twain.” Being a part of Cane’s early days was a unique and unforgettable experience, adding a touch of wild wonder to our canine family.
In my pursuit of canine expertise, I earned an animal science diploma and acquired various certificates for canine genetics, dog obedience, tracking, and first aid. Before embarking on my entrepreneurial venture, I also spent two rewarding years working in a veterinary clinic, gaining valuable insights into the health and well-being of our furry companions.
Tails of the Dog is more than just a blog—it’s a heartfelt extension of my love for dogs and the joy I find in helping new puppy owners navigate the exciting, and sometimes challenging, path of puppyhood.
